Finding Aid & Inventory

The Wake Forest University Music Department has performed from the early 1940's until present day, and now includes an orchestra, wind ensemble, symphonic band, jazz ensemble, marching band, concert choir, vocal ensemble, chamber choir, and various small ensembles. This departmental collection includes mixed materials such as choral performance recordings, sheet music, annual departmental reports, performance programs, music essays, photographs, departmental correspondence, and church programs. Much of the collection relates to the years of direction by Thane McDonald, from 1941-1967.

Biographical and Historical Note

The documented history of the Wake Forest Music Department begins in the early 1940's. In 1941, the department included a glee club, a few small music ensembles, a band, and an orchestra directed by Thane McDonald. The Department has continued to put on performances until present day, and now includes an orchestra, wind ensemble, symphonic band, jazz ensemble, marching band, various small ensembles, concert choir, vocal ensemble, and chamber choir.

Collection Overview

This collection includes mixed materials related to the Wake Forest University Music Department. These materials include choral performance recordings on vinyl records, sheet music composed for the department, performance programs, church programs, photographs, music essays, music slides, annual reports of departmental activities, and correspondence of various departmental directors. Many of the materials relate to the direction of Thane McDonald, from the years 1941-1967.
