Biographical and Historical Note

Casar Baptist Church is situated in the village of Casar, North Carolina, being in Number 11 township, Cleveland County. The church was a member of the former Kings Mountain Baptist Association.

The church was first organized in 1894. Jim S. Richard donated the first site, one and a half acres. An additional half acre was purchased from W. Pink Wellman, making two acres in all. A corner stone reveals the following: "Casar Baptist Church organized 1894. Rebuilt 1934." The church worshipped in the Joe Parker store building until the first house of worship was erected in 1896. The first church building was a frame structure about 40 X 60 feet and painted white. It is said to have had a tower and a bell. As there is no written record preserved of the first few years of the Church's history, we must be content with oral statements. It is the consensus of opinion that the first pastor was the Reverend Abram P. Hollifield, and according to the old roll book, the constituent members were D. S. Downs, J. H. Magness, Ellen Newton, and J. A. Newton.

In 1934, the second building was erected. While this structure was in the process of being built, the congregation worshipped in the Casar Methodist Church. The building was a brick veneer structure, and the auditorium was approximately 36 X 50 with wings on both sides about 12 X 34 feet. The auditorium seated about 500 persons and there were 12 separate Sunday School rooms. The opinion is that the church building was dedicated the third Sunday in May 1935. In 1952 the interior of the church was redecorated.

In 1955 the Fellowship Hall was built under the supervision of Mr. L. C. Walker, and in 1958 the parsonage was built.

As of 1963, the following pastors had served the Casar Baptist Church: Reverend A. P. Hollifield, Reverend Matheny, W. J. Hopkins, Bill Hull, Julius Pruett, J. V. Devenny, D. G. Washburn, I. D. Harrill, W. M. Ballard, W. Martin Gold, W. G. Camp, Lawrence Roberts, Lee A. James, Ralph Carpenter, Eugene Gibson, Forrest Teague, Frank Lattimore, and M. H. Janison.
