Biographical and Historical Note

The church records in this collection were microfilmed by the North Carolina Department of Archives and History, Division of Archives and Manuscripts, Raleigh, N.C. in January 1962.

Collection Overview

This microfilm is part of the North Carolina Baptist Historical Collection due to its records for New Hope Baptist Church of Berea, N.C. for 1886-1891; however, it also features the records of two churches of different denominations from the same county (Granville County): Pope's Chapel Christian Church (Pocomoke, N.C.) and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church (Oxford, N.C.). St. Stephen's is obviously Episcopalian, while Pope's Chapel is a part of the Christian Church, which would later become the United Church of Christ. New Hope's records fill only one volume, while Pope's Chapel's fill five and St. Stephen's fill six. The North Carolina Department of Archives and History, the group responsible for microfilming the records, provides breaks between each church's records. The records for all three churches focus primarily on the minutes of church meetings and lists of church members and clergy, though they also provide insight into church events and finances.
