As Winston-Salem gets ready to host its own LGBT Pride parade on Sunday, October 19, we look back at the parades got their start. Held simultaneously in New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago, the first Pride events brought gays and lesbians together to fight for greater social acceptance. Today, Pride parades are held in over 100 U.S. cities and 30 countries across the world. Do they still serve a role in the struggle for social change?
