Herman Eure received his B.S. (1969) from Maryland State College and his Ph.D. (1974) from Wake Forest University, specializing in Parasitology, Ichthyology, and Evolutionary Biology. He worked with the Biology Department Chair, Gerald Esch and conducted his research at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, S.C.. Dr. Eure was the first African American full-time male faculty member when he was hired as a faculty member in the Department of Biology in 1971. He served as chair (1998-2006) of the biology department and was an associate dean (2006-2010) of the College and is now Emeritus Professor of Biology (2013- ).He received the Schoonmaker Faculty Award for Community Service in 2012 and the Reinhardt Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2001. In 1977, he helped found the Office of Minority Affairs, now the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. In this oral history interview, Dr. Eure shares about his background and childhood, his involvement in student government and the civil rights movement while as an undergraduate student, and his growing interest in science. He also describes coming to Wake Forest and what it was like for him, his research project on the Savannah River, and the important role of the Office of Minority Affairs.
