- Dr. Sam Gladding, a native of Georgia, received his B.A. ( ) in history and an M.A. ( ) in counseling from Wake Forest University. He also holds an M.A. in religion from Yale University and a PhD in human development and family studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After previous academic appointments and a stint as Director of Children�۪s Services at the Rockingham County (North Carolina) Mental Health Center, he returned to Wake Forest. Dr. Gladding served as assistant to the president for special projects (1990-1997) and was the associate provost (1997-2007) from 1997 to 2007. He also chaired the Department of Counseling, where he still teaches. He has authored numerous publications and media materials, including 45 books, 80 articles, and 22 book chapters. Dr. Gladding has also been a leader in his field of counseling, serving on various boards for professional organizations and honorary societies. This oral history interview includes Dr. Gladding sharing his early memories of the Wake Forest campus, and the impact of counseling on his administrative and communication style. Of special interest is his describing working with President Thomas Hearn, and the City of Joy experience, where he traveled with students to Calcutta.
