Margaret (Peggy) Supplee Smith received her B.S. (1961) in Education from the University of Missouri, her M.A. (1971) in Art History from Case Western Reserve University, and her Ph.D. (1976) in Art History from Brown University. Prior to her arrival at Wake Forest, Dr. Smith held academic positions at Fort Hays Kansas State College, Florida State University, Bryant College, New England School of Art, University of Massachusettes, and Boston University. She was named an Associate Professor (1979-1985) at Wake Forest, and then was promoted to Professor (1986-1999), University Professor (2000-2004), Harold W. Tribble Professor (2005-2011), and as Harold W. Tribble Professor Emerita (2012- ). Dr. Smith served as Chair of Department of Art (1980-1988; 1997-2004) and as Coordinator for the North Carolina Women�۪s History Project for the North Carolina Museum of History. She has written numerous articles and publications on art, architecture, and the history of women. Wake Forest awarded Dr. Smith its highest honor, the Medallion of Merit, in 2014. In this oral history interview, Dr. Smith shares about her childhood and young adulthood teaching through the U.S., and her interest in art and architecture. From the Wake Forest perspective, she discusses her time as a young Department chair of the Art Department, the establishment of Women's Studies in the early 1980s, and the architectural background and history of the campus.
