- abstract
- This study seeks to capture the diverse and often-unheard experiences of Latina women with newly diagnosed and poorly controlled type 2 diabetes in a patient-provider setting at the Community Care Center located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This study focuses on Latina women due to the lack of representation for this particular marginalized population. While many studies focus on a general population, white male homogeneity is prevalent, drowning out female voices and most often communities of color. This study incorporates a CBPR (Community Based Participatory Research) approach with a LatCrit theoretical framework in order to recognize the efforts our community members make to better this health epidemic, as well as uplift and acknowledge Latina women as the agents and creators of knowledge. Latina patients will participate in semi-structured interviews where questions will be designed to capture the nuanced ways in which Latina patients with poorly controlled diabetes experience care, the challenges they encounter and how those challenges impact their health, and finally, opportunities they see for enhancing their care experience and health outcomes. Interview transcripts will be thematically analyzed using the constant comparative method and the results will generate translational insights that can be used to inform the implementation of programs, strategies, and/or methods to support care within this specific clinical setting.
