Wanda K. Brown received her B.A. (1977) in English from Winston-Salem State University, her M.L.I.S (1983) from UNC-Greensboro, and began her librarian career as a student assistant at the Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest University. She was hired as a library technician (1977-1983), assistant librarian (1983-1984), assistant head of cataloging (1984-1989, promoted to head of cataloging (1989-1995), then team leader (1996-2007) of technical services, and finally associate dean (2007-2016). In 2016, Wanda K. Brown was named the Director of Library Services for the C. G. O'Kelly Library at Winston-Salem State University. Brown has also served as President of the North Carolina Library Association and President of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. She is the 2015 recipient of the DEMCO/Black Caucus Award for Excellence in Librarianship and the 2013 University of North Carolina - Greensboro School of Education, Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award. This oral history interview includes Brown's description of her background and growing up, her education, and her career in the Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest University. She also shares about her mentoring experiences and professional development in library organizations.
