Amanda Bellamy Smart was born to a wealthy, plantation-owning family in Virginia in the early 1800s. Her collection includes correspondences with friends and family from 1831-1844.

Biographical and Historical Note

Amanda Bellamy Smart was born in Richmond, Virginia, around 1810. Her father was John Bellamy, a wealthy plantation owner in the Virginia Beach area. She later moved to Warrenton, North Carolina, where she lived on a tobacco and cotton plantation. Smart died in 1845 from heart complications, and was buried with her child in Petersburg, Virginia.

Collection Overview

This collection contains ten letters to Amanda Bellamy Smart from family and close friends. Letters are organized in folders, ordered chronologically. Correspondents include her cousins, Emily and Jacob "Paine" Smart, sister Eliza Mann, aunt Elizabeth Clarke, and family friend Orillor Vreelan. There is also one disorganized letter without the writer's signature. Topics of the letters include familial conversations, politics, and references to illness.
