Black and white photograph shows Professor Jones, wearing eyeglasses, a dark suit and tie, seated at a microphone. The back of the photograph reads "On February 17, 1938, Dr. William Louis Poteat recorded excerpts from his 'Christ and Race,' an address which he had prepared for delivery to the Baptist State Convention in 1937. Because of illness, Dr. Poteat was unable to deliver the address, which was read to the Convention by Dr. J. Allen Easley. Zon Robinson and Lewis Aycock carried the recording equipment to Dr. Poteat's home - with the approval of Dr. Poteat's physician, Dr. George Mackie - and made the recording. This photograph shows Professor H. Broadus Jones, Chairman of the English Department, seated at the equipment on which Dr. Poteat’s address was recorded and on which Professor Jones recorded a brief introduction to Dr. Poteat’s address. 100 copies of the recording were made and distributed to interested alumni. The complete recording may be found on cassette tape number 1938/P1 of the University Oral History Project; master tape #1. The sound recorder shown in the photograph was the first one owned by Wake Forest College. The components were selected by Professor Githens of the Physics Department, and the completed outfit was designed and assembled by Professor Githens and by Professor Aycock of the English Department about 1936-1937. It served as a recorder, a phonograph, and a public address system for a number of years."
