The Director of Women's Athletic Records document the work of Dorothy Casey and Marjorie Crisp along with the North Carolina Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NCAIAW). This organization oversees collegiate athletics for women and administers competitions in the state of North Carolina. Dorothy Casey and Marjorie Crisp were both among the first female faculty members at Wake Forest University. Marjorie Crisp joined the physical education department in 1947, where she established Wake Forest's physical education program for women, founded the intramural sports program for women and later led the university's efforts to organize intercollegiate athletics for women. She served as director of women's athletics from 1971 to 1974. Dorothy Casey joined the physical education department in 1949. She replaced Crisp as women's athletic director at Wake Forest, in which she guided the Deacon Women's program through Title IX into the athletic department. Her women's teams competed at the AIAW Division II level and eventually at the NCAA DIvision I level. Both Casey and Crisp were inducted into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame on January 8th, 1993. Biographical and Historical Note
Dorothy Casey, the daughter of Edgar Robert and Narcissa Grady Casey, was born on January 5, 1926 in Wayne County, NC. Casey attended Louisburg Junior College and graduated from Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro) in 1948, completing her master's degree from UNC-Chapel Hill shortly after. She joined the Wake Forest College physical education faculty in 1949 and in 1974, she replaced Marjorie Crisp as women's athletic director, guiding the Deacon women's program through the influence of Title IX, which provided equal opportunities for women, into the athletic department. Her women's teams competed at the AIAW Division II level and eventually at the NCAA DIvision I level. Casey was inducted into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame on January 8th, 1993.
Marjorie Crisp was born in Cleveland County, NC, and graduated from Appalachian State University in 1934, completing her master's degree from George Peabody College (now part of Vanderbilt University). She joined Wake Forest in 1947, becoming the first full-time female faculty member. Crisp established Wake Forest's physical education program for women, founded the intramural sports program for women and later led the university's efforts to organize intercollegiate athletics for women. She served as director of women's athletics from 1971 to 1974. She was inducted into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame on January 8th, 1993.
