Biographical and Historical Note

Beaver Dam Baptist Church is located in Beaver Dam township, Cumberland County, N.C. The church was organized in 1802. The church has been a member of the Neuse I [E] (1804-05), Cape Fear [E] (1806-63), Cedar Creek [E] (1864-1908), Cumberland [E] (1909-22), and New South River (1924-present) Baptist associations.

Collection Overview

This collection contains minutes of church conferences from before March 1802 to July 1803, and from Sept. 28, 1828, 1969, including membership rolls, association letters, and loose items.

  • Minute book  (1802-1858) box 1 volume 3 (Minutes of church conferences form Jan.? 1802 to July 1803; and from Sept. 1818 to Aug. 1858, including rules of decorum (1859) and treasurer's reports. Some of the chruch convereces were held at Gray's Crek, Cedar Creek [later Cedar Creek Baptist Church (1844), Fayetteville, N.C.], and Briery Branch [now Briar Branch Baptist Church (1843), Elizabethtown, N.C.].Subjects include the appointment of delegates to the association and union meetings, and to other church's meetings; financial matters; the reception, discipline, and dismissal of church members, including African-Americans; committee appointments and reports; the ordinations of Thomas Smith (Nov. 5, 1847) and Reuben Fisher (Nov. 1848); the constitution of Briah Branch Baptist Church, Oct. 21, 1843; with a list of members; and letters received from Mount Lisbon Baptist church in June 1835 and 1836. Also mentioned was Fleet Cooper's church, Moores Creek [now Moores Creek Baptist Church, (1833), Wilmington, N.C.]; William Cooper's church; Fork meeting house, and Mount Zion [now Mount Zion Baptist Church (1837), Whiteville, N.C.]This ledger-sized volume contains ink entrties on un-numbered pages.)
  • Minute book  (1827-1911) box 1 volume 4 (Minutes of church conferences from May 1859 to Oct, 1910, including articles of faith and constitution (1870), male and female membership rolls, rules of decorum (1870), a copy of the church deed (May 5, 1827), and resolutions (p.480-83, 488).This large ledger book contains ink entries on pages numbered 1-502. The writing is faded in several areas.)
