Biographical and Historical Note

Back Swamp Baptist Church was constituted on December 22, 1839 as Mount Pisgah Baptist Church by nine men, seventeen women, and one female slave. These twenty-seven members from all sections of the community constituted themselves into a Regular Baptist Church. Rev. Newton Hayes preached the first sermon, and the second sermon was delivered by Elder Furney Prevatte, who accepted a call to preach for them four times a year. Its name was changed to Back Swamp Baptist Church in 1849.

Collection Overview

This collection contains church covenants (1839, circa 1849, and 1852), undated membership lists of males, females, and African Americans with occasional notes of dates of baptism, dismission, exclusion, reception, etc. (1840-1858), church meeting minutes (February 22, 1840- September 11, 1858), and resolutions (circa 1852). In the minutes of September 1849, it is recorded that the church's name was changed from "Mount Pisgah Baptist Church" to "Back Swamp Baptist Church." The minutes are typewritten on loose-leaf pages.
