Sandy Springs Baptist Church (Yadkinville, N.C.) Records

Finding Aid & Inventory

Biographical and Historical Note

Sandy Springs Baptist Church was founded in 1841 in Yadkinville, N.C. (Iredell County). The church is a member of the Yadkin Baptist Association. It has been referred to sometimes as Sandy Spring Baptist Church.

Collection Overview

This collection contains minute books, 1841-1937, and a membership book, 1892-1904.

The minute book with notes dated 1861-1880 also contains the Civil War diary of a person or persons serving in the Confederate States Army or a Confederate militia out of Lebanon. It's unclear if that refers to Lebanon, N.C., in Durham County or Lebanon, Virginia, in Russell County.

Collection Inventory

  • Civil War diary of the "Lebanon Greys," a possible Confederate States Army company or militia, pages 2-39  (1861, 1865) box 1 volume 4 (This diary, from soliders in the Army of the Confederate States of America, begins: "On Tuesday the 23rd day April 1861 at the Court House in the town of Lebanon a company for the defense of the South was organized comprised of the Young men of the town and vicinity," and "it was unanimously determined to call themselves The Lebanon Greys." The entries, which may have been written by two people, cover 1861 April through August, with a final entry dated 1865 April 9: "today the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered Quite an unpleasant day with the Rebs today in [Virginia]." Topics of the nearly-daily entries include names and ranks of soldiers in the unit; the unit's movements across N.C., through the Blue Ridge Mountains and Virginia, including a stop in Charlottesville; and daily occurances such as letters received, food, illnesses, and weather. A note, before the church related entries in the book begin, provides insight into the diary's provenance. It reads: "This book was found on the battlefield of Manasses [Virginia]. Brought here by T. F. Hayne and sold to M. S. Vestal. And then M.S. Vestal taken this book and presented it to the Sandy Spring Church. M. S. Vestal, C.C.")
