Biographical and Historical Note

Bethany Baptist Church was organized by Elder T. J. Horner, August 6, 1883. The membership came from Mount Zion Baptist Church. There had been a mission in the area for some time maintained by the Flat River Association. Elder T. J. Horner was the first pastor. In 1883's Flat River Association Minutes, we find that a house of worship had been built at Bumpass' Cross Roads during Spring 1883 with funds collected from the neighborhood and several churches. The Church was constituted Monday, August 5, 1883, with fifteen members who started "with a good house and free from debt."
