Biographical and Historical Note

Hephzibah Baptist Church was constituted on December 30, 1809 by Elders John Purefoy of Wake Cross Roads and John Gulley of Rocky Springs Church in Johnston County. The ten charter members were: William Broadwell, Henry Jordon, Reuben Jordon, Lott Robertson, Martin Hall, Savina Bagwell, Christiana Bagwell, Mary Jordon, Sophia Hocut, and Martha Hall. John Purefoy was the elected pastor.

  • Letters, notes, and financial records  (circa 1813-1907) box 1 folder 1 (This folder contains a letter giving permission to two slaves to join the Hephzibah Baptist Church in 1864; a church letter granted to Ashley Wilder, his wife and daughter, 1866; and a report of the Finance Committee, 1907.)
  • Minute book  (circa 1883-1928) box 1 volume 4 (Minutes of church conferences from Aug. 1875 to Nov. 2, 1913, including list of male and female members since Sept. 1863; alphabetical male and female membership lists, 1891; a list of Black male and female members, undated; treasurer's reports for 1878, 1887, and 1898-1904; finance committee reports, 1905-1913; obituaries/ memorials for E.C. Richardson, and Dr. A.D. Paris, 1888; a letter to Sister Mar A. Todd, 1882; Rules of Decorum, 1882; resolutions, 1886, 1887; and copies of deeds for church property, 1812 and 1850.)

Todd, 1859, and William c. Nowell, 1863.)
