First Baptist Church (Wilson, Wilson County, N.C.) was constituted May 6, 1860. It became First Baptist Church, Wilson, N.C. in 1916. The church has been a member of the Tar River, Roanoke [E], and South Roanoke Baptist associations. This collection contains the Church Sermon Records Book, hymn records (1919-1927), sermon and address records, pastor and deacon meeting minutes (1920), and marriage records (1919-1927).

Biographical and Historical Note

First Baptist Church (Wilson, Wilson County, N.C.) was constituted May 6, 1860. It became First Baptist Church, Wilson, N.C. in 1916. The church has been a member of the Tar River, Roanoke [E], and South Roanoke Baptist associations.

Collection Overview

This collection contains the Church Sermon Records Book, which contains hymn records (1919-1927), sermon and address records for varied locations, such as Cary Baptist Church, Second Church, orphanages, high schools, etc. (1919-1932), sermons and other related records of the church (1919-1927), pastor and deacon meeting minutes (1920), and marriage records (1919-1927). They are handwritten in a hardcover notebook, which has edge-worn covers, a damaged spine, and chipped yellowed paper. 188 pages. Some pages are missing. Loose items include notes (circa 1918-1927, undated), newspaper clippings (1921-1924, undated), letters (1926, 1927, undated), and a special program of Memorial Baptist Church, Greenville, N.C. (undated).

Church minutes volume 1 contains meeting minutes (1860-1879). They are handwritten in a hardcover notebook, which has edge-worn covers, a damaged spine, loose binding, and yellowed loose leaves.

Church minutes volume 2 contains contains church meeting minutes (1895-1907) [broken series], a subscription list (undated), and financial records (undated). They are handwritten in a hardcover notebook, which has loose leaves and stained paper. 193 pages.

Church minutes volume 3 contains articles of faith (1878), a covenant, constitution, membership rolls of males and females with notes of dates when they joined and left the church (circa 1871-1887), church meeting minutes (1879-1895), and illegible financial records (undated). They are handwritten in a previously bound volume, which has yellowed stained loose leaves. Covers and spine are missing. 286 pages.

Collection Inventory

  • Minute book  (1860-1879) box 1 volume 1 (Minutes of chruch conferences from the organization fo the church on May 6, 1860 to May 31, 1879, including articles of faith; a chruch covenant; male, femal, and negro membership rolls, ca. 1860 and a revised male and female membership roll, 1878; and a list of charter members. Subjects include the appointment of messengers to the association; the election and odinaiton of deacons; financial matters; the Lord's Supper; the call and postponement of the ordination of J. h. Freeman, June-Aug., 1866; the ordination of George W. Newell, 29 June 1872; the reception, discipline, and dismissal of church members; the selection of a pastor; committee appointments and reports; and a tribute of respect for William Hooper (d. 19 Aug 1876), 5 Sept. 1876. This volume is a narrow ledger with loose covers containing inck entries on un-numbered pages. There are no minutes for Sept. 1861-June 1862, Nov. 1862- Oct. 1863. A note dated 3 Sept. 1865 said that during the past two years no conference meetins were held due to the absence of male members who were in the Confederate Army.)
  • Minute book  (circa 1871-1895) box 1 volume 2 (Minutes of church conferences from July 5, 1879 to October 27, 1895, including articles of faith (1878); an association letter; male and female membership rolls (p. 21-28, 131-144); and a treasurer's report, 1884. Subjects include most of those listed in the prior volume. This volume has the covers missing. It is letter-size on pates numbering 3-286. Pages 121-129, 145-147, and 284-285 are blank. Ink entries are faded in some areas.)
  • Minute book  (1895-1907) box 1 volume 4 (Minutes of church conferences from Nov. 6, 1895 to June 5, 1907, including a treasurer's report, 1905. subjects include most of those mentioned in prior volumes and improvemetns to church properties; the parsonage; the election of Sunday School officers; pledges of the church debt; and the appointment of an organist and choir director, 1898. This volume is a narrow ledger contianing ink entries on pages numbered 1-193 (pp. 51-193 are blank). There are no minutes from October 1899 to January 1905.)
