The Mount Vernon Baptist Church is located 3 miles west of the Neuse River in Wake County, N.C. The church was formally known as Wake Liberty, 1810-1847. The church was constituted August 18, 1810 by Elders John Purefoy and Bartholomew Fuller. This volume contains "Declaration of Faith", name lists of male and female members that were copied down from "the 1833 original book" with notes of dates (the earliest date: 1821), church meeting minutes (1840-1859, 1869), and "Treasurer's Account Book" (1840-1858). It is handwritten in a hardcover notebook. A dismission note on a loose-leaf paper (1870) is also included.

Biographical and Historical Note

The Mount Vernon Baptist Church is located 3 miles west of the Neuse River in Wake County, N.C. The church was formally known as Wake Liberty, 1810-1847. The church was constituted August 18, 1810 by Elders John Purefoy and Bartholomew Fuller. The first building was a frame dwelling house which had been converted into a one-room structure, 1810-1845. The second building was a frame structure, 36' x 80' with concrete steps, plain glass windows, five Sunday School rooms, and carbide lamps. This building was dedicated July 17, 1848. John Purefoy was the first resident pastor, 1810-1834. The church reported a Sunday School since 1865. Church membership in 1830-64; in 1901-161; and in 1963-243.
