Biographical and Historical Note
Flat Rock Baptist Church was organized June 10, 1783 by William Petty. It was originally called Hunting Creek. Several members had been members of the disordered Dutchman's Creek [Eatons] Baptist Church. Many arms of this church were established by Petty and his assistant William Cook. As the arms or branches of the church grew stronger they would petition the mother church for organization into a separate church. Arms of Flat Rock included the following churches (with dates petitioned): Grassy Knob [Creek], 1789; Eatons [usually regarded as a continuation of Dutchman's Creek], December 1790; Bear Creek, August 1791; Club Creek, May 1794; Deep Ford on Reddie's Creel, June 1796; and Warrior River, May 1799. Most of these churches have survived unto the present and still use their original names.
