- description
- Yaffa Ali is a Junior at Wake Forest University majoring in Psychology and Neuroscience. Ali grew up in semi-conservative traditional Muslim family. Ali holds Islam and her faith close to her heart and prays five times a day and fasts during Ramadan. In this oral history, Ali relates how her faith impacted her education and social activities, from how she feels being visibly Muslim as a minority on campus to how she made her first friend on campus and got involved with social ogranizations on campus. Ali also recounts a negative experience when she was giving a tour to a muslim friend considering Wake Forest University for her education and had to explain why the quad was covered in toilet paper after President Trump's inauguration. While in a class, she had to reconcile her muslim identity with her Palestinian identity when confronted with pushback from a professor on a contemporary issue. Her parting thoughts address the identity struggles muslim students go through when they attend Wake Forest, and how Wake Forest should work with faculty and students to help new muslim students feel more comfortable in their new environments and explore their identities on campus.
