- description
- Haris Shehzad is a Junior at Wake Forest University majoring in Biology. Shehzad is the Vice President of the Muslim Student Association (MSA). In this oral history, Shehzad speaks about his views while growing into a more liberal Muslim and how he avoided the MSA when he first started at Wake but as he got more and more involved with MSA, he wanted Muslims to realize that they have a place and are accepted with their wide variety and differences. He also speaks about the affirmations rally held on Manchester Quad after the 2016 election results and the impact of seeing professors, administrators, and students gathering to support each other; inversely, he speaks of the negative impacts of being Muslim in a classroom setting and being identified as one of the few, if not only, Muslims in the class. He praises Wake's supportive community, and the work the Administration has done so far for the students (Muslim Student Lounge), but asks that the Administration continues to provide consistent financial support to minority student group organizations on campus. Shahzad emphasizes that MSA should keep moving toward an inclusive model for members, pointing out that they want people who may not be strict or devout Muslims to feel as welcome and heard as much as the Muslim who just wants to make sure they aren't doing something wrong.
