Oscar Fitz Allen Baxter was born July 5, 1819, in Currituck County, N.C. He received his bachelor's (1840) and master's degrees (1842) from Wake Forest College and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Baxter went on to become a passed assistant surgeon in the U.S. Navy. Materials in this collection include a listing from the General Catalogue of Wake Forest detailing Baxter's educational and professional background along with an autobiographical letter addressed to the Medical Naval Board in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Biographical and Historical Note
Oscar Fitz Allen Baxter was an alumnus of Wake Forest College (1840, 1842) and native of Currituck County, N.C. He was born in Currituck County, N.C., on July 5, 1819, and attended Wake Forest College (1835-1842), receiving both Bachelor (1840) and Master of Arts (1842) degrees. Baxter then attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia for medical school. He married Sarah Francis Talbot and became Assistant of Surgery in the U.S. Navy. Before 1861, he attained the rank of Passed Assistant Surgeon. Once the Civil War broke out, he resigned his position with the U.S. Navy and became a surgeon in the Confederate States Army. He served in the 49th NC Infantry as Physician. He later became a planter and resided in Elizabeth City, N.C., where he died October 3, 1892.
