- Courtney McMillian is a protest organizer and activist for the Black Lives Matter movement in Winston-Salem, NC. In this interview, McMillian, a graduate of Winston-Salem State University (majored in sociology and minored in public health) discusses her response to the current public health crisis and the state of the nation in terms of race relations. McMillian describes her initial reaction to COVID-19 as one of shock, hearing about it from a friend during a car ride right before spring break. As a retail worker, McMillian was able to provide her perspective on the use of social distancing, mask wearing, and other safety procedures in outside spaces such as stores. The interview then shifts to a discussion on race relations in the United States. She explains her views on the death of George Floyd and others and how these events shaped her opinions on the situation. As an organizer and protestor, she also provides key insight into the on the ground thoughts and feelings of those individuals protesting and organizing as a part of the Black Lives Matter movement.
