- Dr. Blake Briggs is an Assitant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of South Alabama's Department of Emergency Medicine. Although born in Pontiac, Michigan, Dr. Briggs considers his hometown to be Knoxville, Tennessee where he moved at an early age. Briggs received his Bachelor's Degree in History from Wake Forest University in 2013 and his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 2017. At the time of this interview, Dr. Briggs was residing in Mobile, Alabama. In this interview, he provides a unique and candid account of what he experienced and witnessed as an emergency room doctor serving on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. From March until June 30th, Dr. Briggs worked as an ER doctor at Wake Forest Baptist Health, making him a key source for detailing the issues that Forsyth County experienced at the onset of the pandemic. He notes that one of the major issues in Forsyth County at the start of the virus was the lack of testing. Dr. Briggs also touches on the disparities in minority communities in Winston-Salem who have been greatly affected by COVID-19, especially the Hispanic community. Overall, this interview discusses a number of issues that have emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic including racial disparities, lack of PPE and testing, and the life of a healthcare professional during a stressful point in his career.
