- Dixon Douglas (B.A. Wake Forest '16) is the owner of CycleBar of Winston-Salem. CycleBar is a national organization that has fitness studios across the country offering access to cycling groups and fitness classes. Due to the onsent of COVID-19, businesses like Douglas' which rely on in person interaction to thrive were forced to close their doors to prevent community spread. In this interview, Douglas, who first started this location of CycleBar in 2018 describes how he felt seeing similar businesses like the YMCA close around mid-March. He and his team decided that a temporary closure would be best to protect the safety and wellbeing of their patrons and staff. Douglas describes how he and the CycleBar team transitioned into online operations, offering online courses for those wishing to stay fit during the pandemic. Douglas himself started a GoFundMe page to support local small businesses and restauraunts during this time of need. Douglas describes his CycleBar business as having formed a community throughout its operation and as such his team decided to offer as many options as possible including outdoor popup classes for Winston-Salem residents. He also discusses his support of the Black Lives Matter movement and his sense of place in the Winston-Salem community.
