Biographical and Historical Note

WFDD is a Wake Forest University owned public radio station. It was founded by Wake Forest students and was fully licensed in 1948. It was originally named "WAKE" until they had to rebrand to "WFDD" which stands for "Wake Forest Demon Deacons." Early on, the station featured sports games, student music programs, and talk guests. Some Wake Forest professors had radio show, including David Smiley's Reid Staton Bible Class. WFDD was a charter member of National Public Radio (NPR) and became available on the Internet in the 1980s.

As of 2020, it airs in 32 western North Carolina counties as well as online. The station programming includes news and talk shows during the day and switches to classical music after work hours.

This collection contains materials from the WFDD radio station including correspondence, governing documents, newspaper clippings, photographs, programming publications, show recordings, and staff lists. Recordings include two of the station's original shows, Piedmont Voices and  Triad Arts Up Close.

This collection is organized into four series: Series 1. Administrative materials; Series 2. Audio recordings, general; Series 3. Audio recordings, News, on DAT (Digital Audio Tape) cassettes; Series 4. Audio recordings, Piedmont Voices show, on DAT (Digital Audio Tape) cassettes; Series 5.
