Biographical and Historical Note

The Department of Romance Languages was the home of many non-English languages at Wake Forest. Its name appears to have changed to Romance Languages from Modern Languages sometime in the World War II era, the 1940s. Notable professors include Mary Frances McFeeters Robinson, who taught French and sometimes Spanish from 1952-1989; she served twice as department chair (1968-1974, 1978-1982) and was one of the first women professors at WFU along with English professor Elizabeth Phillips. Most professors in the department taught French and Spanish, but other language courses were available sometimes: Chinese, Hindi, Italian, and Russian, among others. Harold D. Parcell, her predecessor as chair, served in that role for decades and taught French (1935-1970). Admissions director and Dean of the College William C. Archie also taught French briefly, early in his career at Wake Forest. History of Wake Forest College chart the history of language robustly.

This department is the precuror of current language departments, which include French Studies, German and Russian, and Spanish and Italian.
