Biographical and Historical Note

Wake Forest University's Oral History Project was undertaken by retired art and English professor A. Lewis Aycock at the request of President James Ralph Scales. From 1970-1977, Aycock interviewed alumni, retired faculty and staff, and family members of former professors. The offical Oral History Association defines this as a method for gathering historical information in oral form, usually on tape. Scales wanted a recording from every living retired faculty member and other members of the Wake Forest community, as well as artifacts related to the institution's history. There are still oral history projects ongoing at the university today, including oral histories undertaken by Special Collections and Archives staff.

A button from the groundbreaking ceremony of the Reynolda campus is also included.
