Biographical and Historical Note

The Rare Books and Manuscripts department is a predecessor of the Special Collections and Archives at Wake Forest University's Z. Smith Reynolds Library. The Rare Books and Manuscripts collections are particularly strong in American, Irish, and British literature of the 18th through 20th centuries; African-American history and literature; and cultural and social history, with special emphasis on North Carolina history and regional Americana. The department was headed by Rare Books Librarian Richard Murdoch from 1978 to the early 1990s, and Sharon Snow from 1993 to 2009, before becoming part of Special Collection and Archives.

A Friends of the Library group existed at Wake Forest College's Heck-Williams Library. A second such group was created from roughly 1986-1988 and included Richard Murdoch and Sharon Snow.
