Bush and Democrat candidate Vice President Al Gore debated on stage in the second of three debates for the 2000 presidential election. Biographical and Historical Note
Wake Forest University hosted the Presidential Debate on October 11, 2000, in Wait Chapel. Republican candidate George W. Bush and Democrat candidate Vice President Al Gore debated on stage in the second of three debates for the 2000 presidential election. The debate was sponsored by non-profit Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD). Jim Lehrer of Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) program The NewsHour posed the questions for each candidate. An estimated 37.5 million viewers watched the broadcasted debate.
This is the second debate that Wake Forest hosted; in 1988, presidential candidates George H. W. Bush and Michael Dukakis debating in Wait Chapel in front of an estimated 65 million television viewers.
