Abstract

Information from: Office of Information, Progressive Care brochure, 1961.

Description

An unidentified beautician styles an identified customer's hair at the Barber/Beauty Shop located in North Carolina Baptist Hospital's Progressive Care Center. The year 1961 was the year that NCBH opened the Progressive Care Center, also known as "Hospital Hotel." The Center was designed for patients that needed to be near their physicians for examining and treatments but were not critically ill enough to need a hospital bed, nursing care or their food brought to them. The Center consisted of five floors with 44,000 square feet of floor space and contained 80 private rooms. Amenities included a recreation room, lobbies on each floor, a nursing station, an emergency examining room as well as a beauty and barber shop. The last reference to the shops being open was Spring of 1992.
