dc.descriptionLucy Boylan, nurse at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, was ordered to the 902d Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in 1949 by the United States Army. During World War II, Boylan had already been a member of the Army reserve from March 1945 to August 1946 but had not yet been officially assigned to a unit enabling her to take actual military training. Boylan was one of two nurses at North Carolina Baptist Hospital who were the first members in their profession chosen to be assigned to Organized Army Reserve units. The 902d was set up at NCBH in August 1949 and was commanded by Major James W. Brown.en_US
