Description

Dr. James Harrill (left) examines a patient?s ear in this undated photograph. Harrill graduated in 1933 from the old two-year medical school in Wake Forest, NC. He came to Winston-Salem in the summer of 1938 and opened a private otolaryngology practice. In 1941 he moved his local practice and became affiliated with the new Bowman Gray School of Medicine by accepting the position of Assistant Professor of Surgery. Harrill was one of the original twelve faculty members and received credit for performing the first tonsillectomy and laryngectomy in western North Carolina. Harrill retired in 1980.
