dc.descriptionThe Medical Center was the focus of attention on September 28, 1992, when Democratic vice presidential candidate Al Gore paid a two-and-half-hour visit as part of a campaign trip to North Carolina. The Medical Center was contacted on Thursday and the visit was on Monday. Medical Center personnel met with a Gore advance team and Secret Service representatives during the four days before the actual visit to work out the details. Gore held a roundtable discussion on health care issues in the 6 Reynolds playroom at Brenner Children's Hospital and he conducted a press conference on 2 Watlington. He also made a special visit to the Intensive Care Nursery inside of North Carolina Baptist Hospital to meet with parents of critically ill children to talk about health insurance. Newspapers in North Carolina and several other states wrote about the visit, and it was covered by all local television stations.en_US
