| dc.description | The wives of faculty members volunteered their personal time by working in various areas of the new North Carolina Baptist Hospital that opened in 1923. When the hospital opened linens were scarce so the first director of nursing, Edna Heinzerling, decided to organize a group of ladies to sew and donate linens. The ladies agreed and word spread of the organization. The actual making of linens by the community ladies was first done in a room of the Zinzendorf Hotel located in downtown Winston-Salem. This photo only identifies Mrs. Johnson, who is on the far left. Mrs. Johnson was the wife of Dr. Wingate Johnson, who had a private practice clinic in Winston-Salem since 1910. Dr. Johnson officially joined the Bowman Gray School of Medicine faculty in January 1942 and was made chief of the newly established Private Diagnostic Clinic. | en_US |
