Dr. Henry G. Cramblett came to the North Carolina Baptist Hospital and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine as the director of a new viral diagnostic service in January 1960. This service was established along with a research laboratory in order to help identify new strands of viruses. Dr. Cramblett's staff in 1960 consisted of a registered nurse, a technician, and two medical students who assisted in the laboratory on a part-time basis. Dr. Cramblett is last mentioned as a faculty member in the 1964 Bowman Gray School of Medicine Bulletin.
