Caption provided reads: "Houck at Black Balsam Knob. This is considered to be the most iconic photograph of Houck Medford, founder of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. It was taken in the fall of 2004. The camera was mounted on a tripod, and Houck's wife, KB, activated the shutter. Wind conditions were such that the camera strap can be seen in the upper left corner of some of the images. Also noteworthy and easily seen is the ice crystal rainbow in the upper left quadrant of the image. Its reflection can be seen in water puddle in the rocks to the left. The pullover yellow vest was a favorite and can be found in several images. This image was used in several promotional documents for the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation as well as displayed on a billboard." Caption sourced from metadata embedded by Medford in 2024.
