Description
A native of Durham, Dr. Doctor Ernest “DE” Ward, Jr. received his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University in 1943 and his medical degree in 1945 from Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Upon returning from his two-year tour of duty in 1948 with the United States Navy, Dr. Ward came back to North Carolina Baptist Hospital to earn his residency in general and thoracic surgery. He retired as a physician after 40-plus years of service on December 30, 1990, which was also the day he celebrated his 70th birthday.
