Dr. James A. Harrill graduated from the old two-year medical school in Wake Forest, NC in 1933. He came to Winston-Salem in the summer of 1938 and had already been practicing medicine in the Reynolds building for three years when he decided to become a faculty member at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1941. He was ranked as Assistant Professor of Surgery upon arrival. In searching for the perfect candidate for this position, Dr. Harrill was named by every local physician including those in his own field who might have been competitors. Dr. Harrill specialized in otolaryngology and had to purchase his own instruments because North Carolina Baptist Hospital did not own any type of Ear/Nose/Throat instruments in 1941. He also performed the first tonsillectomy at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
