In 1916, the first issue of the Old Gold and Black was published in Wake County, North Carolina. Over the years some of Wake Forest's most distinguished alumni began their careers writing for the newspaper.

W.J. Cash, author of The Mind of the South, served as editor of the newspaper while an undergraduate at Wake Forest.
Gerald Johnson, author, columnist and editorial writer for the Baltimore Sun, was on the staff while attending Wake Forest.
Al Hunt, the executive Washington editor for the Wall Street Journal, also cut his teeth at the Old Gold and Black.
