Description
Muriel Staton, better known as “Quacky,” was the first graduate of the twelve-month Medical Technology Program when it started at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in 1942. She was one of only two employees who performed the lab work in a small room on the fifth floor of the hospital. Staton’s salary was $50.00 per month but included meals and living quarters at the hospital’s nursing school. Staton’s internship included work in hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, blood banking, x-ray and histology. She died in 2000 at the age of 90.
