ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE IN WEST BADIN: THE LASTING IMPACT OF INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION IN A NORTH CAROLINA COMPANY TOWN

Abstract

This research project investigates the disproportionate impact of industrial pollution on Black residents of Badin, North Carolina and evaluates the extent to which residents have been excluded from meaningful involvement in the regulation and remediation of this pollution. To provide an overview of the full scope of impact, this analysis will delve into the local history of industrial aluminum manufacturing and the historical relevance of segregated housing in the Town of Badin. This analysis will examine one primary industrial polluter, Aluminum Company of America (now Alcoa, Inc.), focusing on the central question of how West Badin qualifies as an Environmental Justice Community of Concern (referred to as “EJ Community”).
