Description
This portrait is inscribed, "John Henry Boner and wife Charlotte Smith Boner made sometime 1878-1884." John Henry Boner was born in Salem in 1845 and died in 1903. Charlotte Smith Boner was born in 1844 and died in 1920. John was the son of Thomas Jacob Boner and his wife Phoebe Elizabeth and grew up in their house on Salt Street in Salem. He would become a noted poet, publishing several volumes of poetry. John also worked at the General Printing Office in Washington, D.C., and was the literary editor for the New York World.
