Elbert A. MacMillan received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Medicine in 1931 from Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, NC. He received his degree of doctor of medicine in 1933 from the University of Pennsylvania. He entered the Philadelphia General Hospital as an intern in July 1933, and after completing a two-year internship in 1935 began a residency in Neurology and Psychiatry at the same hospital. After he completed his training, he began a practice of medicine in Winston-Salem in 1936 with Drs. Wingate Johnson and Bennette Pool at the O'Hanlon Building. He was asked by the Trustees of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine on July 25, 1941 if he would accept a position on its faculty as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and Neuropsychiatry. Dr MacMillan accepted the appointment and was with the medical school until 1951 at which time he accepted a position at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.
