Weston (Wes) P. Hatfield, native of Hickory, N.C, attended Wake Forest University and Harvard Law School. Hatfield served three years of service in the U.S. Army, three terms on the University's Board of Trustees, served on the selection committee to find Thomas K. Hearn Jr. as Wake Forest's 12th president, and received the University's highest honor, the Medallion of Merit in 1991. In this interview, Hatfield discusses why Edwin Wilson was not chosen for WFU presidency, how Thomas Hearn came about an interview, the interview process, and the complaints of no faculty or students on the search committee. Hatfield talks about the complaints of Hearn's administration style and compares Hearn and Scales' presidential styles, Hearn's legacy of the break from the Baptist State Convention, and how the Baptist State Convention hired a law firm to fight against the break. Hatfield discusses Hearn's split with first wife Barbara, Hearn's relationship with second wife Laura, Hearn's health and Bill Gordon stepping into the presidency position. Hatfield mentions Bill Joyner, the law school, money, donations, scandal, and influence.en_US
