Dr. Roscoe Legrand Wall, Sr. received his M.D. from Wake Forest College in 1912. A year later he came to Winston-Salem and set up a general practice. He soon became interested in the new field of anesthesiology and five years later faced a tough decision of remaining in general medicine or giving it up for anesthesiology. He chose anesthesiology because he "believed it was a field that would be extremely valuable to medicine in the future." He was the state's first full-time anesthesiologist. Dr. Wall became a faculty member of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1941. During his tenure at the medical school, Dr. Wall established a section in anesthesiology, as well as a nurse and resident training program in anesthesiology. He served 15 years as professor of anesthesiology at the medical school and was named professor emeritus after his retirement in 1957. Dr. Wall died March 17, 1980.
