<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en_US">This thesis examines the relationship between Catholicism and abortion in American bioethical discourse. The project begins by detailing the history of abortion in Catholicism, followed by an exploration of the contemporary environment of the debate within the Catholic community, including the intersection of Catholicism and public policy. In order to firmly locate the study within the American context of abortion discourse, the work explores the intersection between religion and American legislation and data concerning abortion. With the appropriate background in place, I analyze the work of prominent Church father, Thomas Aquinas, and suggest that the official teachings of the Catholic Church should be revised in order to be more consistent with his moral theology.</dim:field>
