One approach, the core approach, proposes one main underlying cause of personality, and our approach which was derived from social-cognitive theories proposes multiple causes underlying each trait. Participants completed the MAP inventory, measures of the Big Five, and measures reflecting proposed cores of extraversion. In line with our predictions, results showed that there is not one, but many distinct causes underlying extraverted behavior. Results also showed that in contrast to the predictions of the core approach, multiple personality traits can share common underlying causes.
