<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en_US">The purpose of this study was to identify the motives, abilities, and perceptual tendencies (“MAP” variables) that underlie extraverted behavior and to compare two approaches to the study of personality traits. One approach, the core approach, proposes one main underlying cause of personality, and our approach which was derived from social-cognitive theories proposes multiple causes underlying each trait. Participants completed the MAP inventory, measures of the Big Five, and measures reflecting proposed cores of extraversion. In line with our predictions, results showed that there is not one, but many distinct causes underlying extraverted behavior. Results also showed that in contrast to the predictions of the core approach, multiple personality traits can share common underlying causes. These results have implications specifically for the study of extraverted behavior and generally for the study of personality development and change.</dim:field>
