Slattery, Sean Patrick 2012-06-12T08:36:08Z 2012 https://wakespace.lib.wfu.edu/handle/10339/37314 On May 19, 2011, in response to the Arab citizen revolt (ACR), otherwise known as the "Arab Spring," President Barack Obama addressed the future of U.S. diplomacy in the Middle East and Northern Africa. This thesis argues that the exigence of the president's address exemplifies a crisis in discourse concerning the "natural" connection between capitalism and democracy. I contend that this time of crisis emerged as the result of a rhetorical struggle between two competing views regarding the bond between economic and political liberalization.
